The Challenge
Keeping people safe — including from infectious diseases — is a top priority for any municipality, and for the city government of Santa Clarita, California, UV-C technology is the key to safeguarding local residents and city employees. Prior to the pandemic, town managers began retrofitting city buildings with UV-C disinfection systems. In addition to improving air quality, ultraviolet energy helps lower HVAC energy use and reduce maintenance costs. Once the pandemic struck, however, officials accelerated their upgrade to cleaner, healthier air.
The Solution
City managers selected UV-C disinfection systems. Operating 24/7/365, UV-C disinfection fixtures can inactivate infectious bacteria and microbes in less than a second. Endorsed by the CDC and the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety, the germicidal technology can be applied extensively in a wide range of building types — both as stand-alone upper-room fixtures and integrated into central HVAC systems — to provide clean, healthy air.
Results
In all, UV-C disinfection systems were added to 21 city buildings, either as stand-alone fixtures or incorporated into the central HVAC system at each facility. The air cleaning technology was added to a new sheriff's station, library and community center — all frequently used, high-traffic destinations for city residents and staff. In addition, these systems provide significant energy savings and reduced maintenance costs, advancing the sustainability goals of city facilities.
